Company History

Brown McLeod was formed on 1st January 1980 by Jimmie Brown C.A.

Jimmie was a senior partner in Hays Allen Chartered Accountants in Holborn, London and decided to set up his own practice in order to offer a more personal service to his clients.

The office was opened close to Bishopsgate in the City of London and Jimmie added McLeod to the company name, as this was his wife's maiden name, and helped emphasise his Scottish roots.

Jimmie took his long-standing secretary, Della Bragg, with him from Hays Allen and also invited Jim Berrie C.A. (another Scot) from the Cambridge office of Hays Allen to join him as a partner.

The company was specialising in looking after overseas clients doing business in the UK and after a successful start invited John Roddison FCA to join as a partner on 1st January 1983.

In 1984 Jimmie left to work directly for one of the overseas clients and John set up Brown McLeod in Whitfield Street (close to Tottenham Court Road) in the West End of London, whilst Jim Berrie set up his own company in Cambridge.

Having a West End office produced a further growth in fees with the firm expanding into the entertainments sector and so in order to manage the expansion, an office was purchased in 1986, at Clarkegrove Road, Sheffield, Yorkshire, where the additional space and staff enabled the growth to continue.

Peter Wilson FCCA, ACA joined the firm in 1989 and became a partner in 1991 when he qualified.

The firm still operates from Clarkegrove Road, Sheffield, and in London is based at Mayfair.
